Ryan Lee is an entrepreneur, best-selling author, speaker, success coach and the founder of ryanlee.com.  He started his first web site back in 1999. He grew that one fitness site into a multi-million dollar empire.  Ryan is the author of 2 books “The Millionaire Workout” and “Turn Your Passion to Profits”.  There is simply so much more, but I will now turn it over to the man, the myth, the legend, Ryan Lee.

Now, who’s this Dave guy anyway?

Thanks for asking! Let’s see… I’ve been in the computer industry since 1980, believe it or not, and have been online since before the beginning of the Internet. Some say that it wasn’t Al Gore but me who actually invented the Internet, but between Bob Metcalfe, Vint Cerf, Jon Postel, Tim Berners-Lee and many others, we all contributed – big steps or little – to the amazing tool it is today.

I have a number of academic credentials if that’s interesting to you, including a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science from the University of California, San Diego, a Master’s in Education from Purdue University, and a Master’s in Business Administration from University of Baltimore, Merrick School of Business. I generally skip the alphabet soup after my name, though.

On the business side, I have created and launched four Internet related startups, the first of which was The Internet Mall. The original one. Long since vanished into obscurity, of course, but I was definitely part of the dot-com bubble and in addition to my own startups I served on the board of a number of different small companies (and continue to do so today) and have worked with various investment and venture capital firms as a due diligence analyst and even an entrepreneur in residence.

In parallel, I learned to write, and write I did. Twenty books. Thousands of magazine and newspaper articles. Today I continue to write both online and off, including being published in the Boulder Daily Camera, the Boulder Weekly, Linux Journal, and Colorado Business Magazine. No books in the pipeline, though, but I write forewords for a few books a year still: if you’re looking for someone to write your foreword, drop me a note!

I’m a frequent – and award-winning – public speaker who goes to a lot of trade and professional conferences every year. I’ve run large conferences, I’ve given dozens of keynote talks, moderated panels, argued on panels, and done just about every other job necessary to keep a conference running smoothly. I teach at a variety of colleges and private institutions, and in addition to helping run two weekly podcasts I also used to co-host an AM-radio phone-in computer show on AM760 here in Colorado.

My Journey

I am a former bi-vocational pastor and contractor.  I was the President and founder of Home Innovations, a Design/Build remodeling firm based in Fishersville, Virginia. We provided design, construction, and fine furnishing services for the home. Beginning in 2010, I pastored a new Heartlink Network church plant in Nelson Co. Virginia called Riverbank.

For years my career and work has centered around construction.  I have always enjoyed working with my hands, but honestly I found my way to construction by default.  I had spent time in summer jobs (that paid better than fast food), church youth group mission projects, and one year serving with Habitat for Humanity, and family projects and learned some skills.  So when I got married, and I needed to provide for our family, I naturally went into construction because it was the only marketable skill that I had.  Through the years I moved from general laborer, to carpenter, and then from foreman to contractor / business owner.

But life has not always been filled with success.  In 2009, the business that I had founded and ran, Home Innovations, failed in bankruptcy.  It was one of the most difficult seasons of my life.  There were a lot of reasons for what happened, some outside of my control.  But, I was the one leading.  I was the one “at the helm when the ship went down.”  I was embarrassed, felt like a failure, and felt like I had let everybody down.  The affects were far reaching, hurting my employees, suppliers, friends and family.  For month’s I struggled with feelings of failure, worthlessness, and hopelessness.  Over the next few years I went through the slow process of healing and rebuilding my career and life.  Therefore, I have a special place in my heart for those who are trying to get back on their feet after a crisis event.  I know first hand how difficult those seasons of life can be.

Ever since I was young, I have sensed a call to pastor and help people.  I studied pastoral ministry at Liberty University and then received my Biblical Studies Certificate from Cornerstone Bible Institute.  My wife and I spent a few years in youth ministry until our twins were born and we shifted our focus to our young family.  In 2008 we started sensing a call to pastoral ministry again and began the process of relocating our family to Nelson County, VA .  Over the next 5 years we gave leadership to the establishment of the Riverbank church. During this time, I also worked bi-vocationally as the Production Department Manager for Integrity Home Contracting in Charlottesville, VA.

In 2013-14 God led me on a journey to personal and relational health that resulted in me resigning from both Integrity Home Contracting and the Riverbank church.  During this season I worked as independent construction consultant and business consultant for construction companies.  I also took this time to rest, spend time with my family, and discern my direction and God given destiny.

As a result of this journey I launched this blog in 2014 as the first step of encouraging ordinary people to fulfill their destinies through writing, coaching and speaking.

About me Personally

I met my beautiful bride during high school.  We are both pretty strong willed and had to “chill out” a little before we started dating after high school.  We were married shortly after in 1996.  We have four amazing daughters (Twins in the middle).  They are teenagers and learning to spread their wings.  I love this season of family life.

I enjoy working with my hands, being outdoors, carpentry projects, gardening and homesteading.  I believe in simple sustainable living and taking care of the wonderful earth that has been entrusted to us.

I love sports and cheering on my favorite teams…. the Atlanta Braves, Liberty Flames Football, and UVA Cavaliers basketball.

And finally, after all these years in construction, I still like my pick-up truck and power tools.  And, I am most comfortable in my jeans and a baseball cap!

TEDxBaghdad is initiated by Yahay Alabdeli, an Iraqi refugee who lives in Amsterdam. His life story is an impressive one. Both sad and optimistic. At the first meeting of the project group for TEDxBaghdad Yahay tells us about his life.

Start of Iran-Iraq War

Yahay Alabdeli moved from Iraq in 1979, when he was only 4 years old. His family lost everything in just a few hours. Yahay tells: “My mother picked me up from school. We saw soldiers in the streets. They took everything, including my father. My father, a businessman, was supposed to have a meeting on the economic future of Iraq. This meeting was supposed to take half an hour. It became 6 months. They took him to prison. They left my mother, my brother (who was 1 year old) and me (4 years) behind. They told my mother to go to her parents. So we did.”

“One evening two men came to the door. They said to my mother that she needed to prepare her two kids for a trip. They wanted to take us to our father in prison, because boys are supposed to stay with their father. Girls stay with their mother. My mother said: “Come back tomorrow. I’ll prepare their bags.” The same second she took a taxi with us in the evening, with no luggage, to Kuwait. We stayed there for a year. Then we heard about my father’s whereabouts.”

Out of prison

“When my father got out of prison, they took him to the border between Iraq and Iran. He got three options. They said: “If you go right, there are landmines. If you go left there’s the Iraqi war and straight ahead there’s Iran.” He walked for three days. Without water or food. Plus, he carried his mother of 90 years old. After a day people couldn’t wear their clothes, because they felt so heavy. And my father had his mother to carry. Incredible. For me it’s a great story on how you can make it, stand up again and be a human again,” says Yahay.

“So, we didn’t know about my father for almost a year. Eventually, we met him in Syria. We became a family again and we moved to Sweden. That’s where I grew up.

I lived there for about 18 years. My family and friends live there. I have a Swedish nationality. We lived in a small village of 4.000 people. If I changed my t-shirt, everyone would know! We were the only foreign family.”

“Since about ten years I live in The Netherlands. Love brought me here.”

As an Entrepreneur, Efficiency Expert, Author and Business Maverick, Al Kiremli has worn many hats during his career. In the last decade alone he has created the world’s first Iraqi food franchise, a unique gaming brand, and undertaken or invested in myriad projects. An endless seeker of knowledge, Al Kiremli holds an MBA from the University of Phoenix, AZ. Supplementing his acquired knowledge and experience through books, seminars and the mentorship of experts, he has managed to continue incorporating his love for learning into his everyday life. In his career, he has used this thirst for knowledge, both the acquiring and sharing of it, to straddle the line between corporate strategist and entrepreneur.

He has tackled such varied challenges as implementing strategic change within decades old companies to establishing and franchising his own Iraqi fast/casual dining brand (IRAQI TOUCH); the first Iraqi food franchise in the world. Along the way, he created an inventive gaming brand (Games Corner) leveraging “dead space” within malls and subsequently franchised the concept, provided tactical leadership to leading regional brands and used his in-depth knowledge of internet marketing to optimally position his brands. He continues to explore new concepts, either his own or unique investment opportunities, daily, and stays true to his overriding passion: to learn all he can, and share that knowledge with others.

Alongside this drive, Al Kiremli has kept striving to find the ideal balance between work and life, developing innovative methods of managing his ever increasing workload in ways that allow him to combine his love for life, and his love for work.  He has streamlined his operations through a combination of outsourcing and productive delegation among other methodologies, freeing up time to allow him to continue developing new concepts, and identifying new opportunities.

A firm believer in the principle that says the right mindset, a willingness to learn, persistence, and a belief in the dreams that drive us combined with the will to take action are the main keys to success means that Al Kiremli has developed a sixth sense which has led him to seizing opportunities others may discard. What Ahmed Al Kiremli says about himself?

When working with someone, I believe it is important for you to know a little bit about that someone. If you are not already familiar with me, my name is Ahmed Al Kiremli. As an entrepreneur, I have started several of my own businesses. I am also an investor as well as an efficiency expert to individuals and companies. In that capacity, I am also frequently called upon to provide mentorships to CEOs and other individuals.

One of the questions that I am frequently asked is what exactly is it that I do. My specialty lies in seeking out new, innovative and more efficient ways to improve business processes as well as everyday life habits. This is an area in which I am intimately familiar. I know whereof I speak. By implementing such efficiency methods and business processes in my own life and career, I have been fortunate enough to experience a high degree of success, including establishing a variety of brands, such as the first Iraqi franchise restaurant in the world (IRAQI TOUCH). Other business enterprises that I have founded include the world’s best movie ratings app (Best Movie Ratings), a kids’ playground concept (Climb and Slide), and a unique video gaming brand (Games Corner).

Needless to say, I have worn many hats during the course of my career and I am continually seeking out and exploring new endeavors on an international and local basis. At the same time, I also continue to look for new and innovative ways in which I can become more efficient.

It is precisely those techniques that I teach to clients in my efficiency consultancy business. You see, I believe that we all have dreams, goals, and desires. We all want to do more. The differentiating factor that results in some people being able to accomplish those goals while others only dream about them is that some people are able to overcome obstacles and work more efficiently while others are not. I strongly believe that every day brings with it the opportunity to learn something new. I have certainly faced many challenges in my own life, yet I continued to persevere, and adapt to any challenges that came way. At some point, we have all failed in the past. I have had my own share of failures, yet I learned something from each of those failures.

Many people call themselves lifelong learners. I think of myself as an endless seeker of knowledge. Along with holding an MBA from the University of Phoenix, I continue to supplement my knowledge and experience with seminars, books (an average of 2 books per week), and expert mentors. Today, I deploy that same thirst for knowledge as a way to not only enhance my own education but also to share it.

As an efficiency consultant, I teach others how to find the time necessary to acquire new skills, how to not only seek out but embrace each day’s new opportunities, and maintain a healthy balance in life through creative management. I not only believe that anything is possible; I can show you how to achieve it.

TEDxBaghdad is initiated by Yahay Alabdeli, an Iraqi refugee who lives in Amsterdam. His life story is an impressive one. Both sad and optimistic. At the first meeting of the project group for TEDxBaghdad Yahay tells us about his life.

Start of Iran-Iraq War Yahay Alabdeli moved from Iraq in 1979, when he was only 4 years old. His family lost everything in just a few hours. Yahay tells: “My mother picked me up from school. We saw soldiers in the streets. They took everything, including my father. My father, a businessman, was supposed to have a meeting on the ECONOMIC future of Iraq. This meeting was supposed to take half an hour. It became 6 months. They took him to prison. They left my mother, my brother (who was 1 year old) and me (4 years) behind. They told my mother to go to her parents. So we did.”

“One evening two men came to the door. They said to my mother that she needed to prepare her two kids for a trip. They wanted to take us to our father in prison, because boys are supposed to stay with their father. Girls stay with their mother. My mother said: “Come back tomorrow. I’ll prepare their bags.” The same second she took a taxi with us in the evening, with no luggage, to Kuwait. We stayed there for a year. Then we heard about my father’s whereabouts.”

Out of prison

“When my father got out of prison, they took him to the border between Iraq and Iran. He got three options. They said: “If you go right, there are landmines. If you go left there’s the Iraqi war and straight ahead there’s Iran.” He walked for three days. Without water or food. Plus, he carried his mother of 90 years old. After a day people couldn’t wear their clothes, because they felt so heavy. And my father had his mother to carry. Incredible. For me it’s a great story on how you can make it, stand up again and be a human again,” says Yahay.

“So, we didn’t know about my father for almost a year. Eventually, we met him in Syria. We became a family again and we moved to Sweden. That’s where I grew up. I lived there for about 18 years. My family and friends live there. I have a Swedish nationality. We lived in a small village of 4.000 people. If I changed my t-shirt, everyone would know! We were the only foreign family.” “Since about ten years I live in The Netherlands. Love brought me here.”

I Am Princess Fizz, founder and host of I Have a Dream Show

Sure, I may be an Entrepreneur now, but I haven’t always been one. Here’s a little background on how I came up with the idea to launch my WebTv show, and also how I’m directing all my passion and energy towards fulfilling I Have A Dream Show’s goal of Encouraging Millions to Dream Again.

The day I left

I come from the middle east from a very important family(royals in the arab work) and most of my life I have been oppressed for being a woman.

The honour of men in that part of the world is measured by how well they hide their women. 23 years of my life was spent behind four walls, no communication to outside world and in full head to toe covering. Even hands yes! No disrespect to anyone that does this out of choice but that is exactly it!! It has to be a choice.

Anytime I questioned the system, I was shut down by being told “because you are a women”…

Due to depression, I turned to books from inspiring leaders from around the world. We had a fantastic library where I could just pick up a BOOK and get inspired in my own world of leaders such as Socrates, Martin Luther King, Hussain Ibn Ali, Ali Ibn Abu Talib and mystics such as Shamz of Tabriaz and Rumi.

At age of 13 I remember reading from Rumi that everyone is made for a purpose and the desire for that purpose has been put into people hearts.

This statement I read over and over and was totally engrossed in it and made different senses to me at different stages of my life.

I learnt from leaders from the past that one has to make sacrifices to bring about a change.

My day changed when I was forcefully married to someone that I didn’t want and had a daughter. First of all my birth of having a baby girl was not celebrated and secondly she had a visual impairment. You can imagine that sense of rejection I faced, going as far as saying that it was my own fault for questioning the system that I was punished.

I couldn’t take it anymore. The passion for FREEDOM what was growing over the years finally ignited. I decided. I decided to leave and everything I had, wealth, large home comfortable lifestyle for FREEDOM

I ended up in UK with a 2 month old baby and started from scratch. Facing many challenges, trials I always had the FREEDOM mindset and intense passion to livelife on my terms that I was able to get through.

Starting up my own web AGENCY in 2009 to being an online entrepreneur in few years.

There are reasons I started looking for alternative routes to having own business, mainly because of spending more time with my daughter and WORKING less hours. My agency was demanding, 18 hour a day and a fixed income level of £5000 per month that wasn’t really growing.

I wanted more time for less work but equal value. So I after years of being an affiliate marketer being paid lousy COMMISSIONS of 40% max for a whole lot of work, I stumbled upon Empower Network in April 2013.

My decision to get involved has changed my life.

This is where IHaveADreamShow was born. How and why is another story that you will have to ask me one day

The reason I shared my journey with you is because you have to be a dreamer. Think big, whatever your situation is, it is all in power of DECISION which is your GOD given right to make a change,

As an Entrepreneur, Efficiency Expert, Author and Business Maverick, Al Kiremli has worn many hats during his career. He continues to explore new concepts, either his own or unique investment opportunities, daily, and stays true to his overriding passion: to learn all he can, and share that knowledge with others.

Alongside this drive, Al Kiremli has kept striving to find the ideal balance between work and life, developing innovative methods of managing his ever increasing workload in ways that allow him to combine his love for life, and his love for work.  He has streamlined his operations through a combination of outsourcing and productive delegation among other methodologies, freeing up time to allow him to continue developing new concepts, and identifying new opportunities.

Our Story

FailCon was started in 2009 by Cass Phillipps, an event planner for startup events and Diane Loviglio, a founder of a cleantech startup.

We’d both produced or attended numerous events for the technology industry, but had begun to realize things were starting to get repetitive. Events put successful entrepreneurs on stage to talk about how they made their company great, something that’s near-impossible to replicate, and never about what they learned from mistakes along the way. In talking to other attendees, we saw this was a pretty universal opinion; and so we decided to work with the community and, together, make something stronger. Our first event launched with over 400 attendees, and we’ve continued to grow since then. We hope you’ll join us and add your unique story and experience to our own.
