<p><em>“My name is Kris Reid. I am a Software Engineer, originally from Brisbane where I graduated from the Queensland University of Technology (A university for the real world).</em></p>
<p><em>I was backpacking around the world a few years ago and because of my love for software development, I built an online game.  As the completion day came near for the game I made, I thought that I should learn how to market if anyone else is ever going to play with it. So, I started studying how Google works and learned about Search Engine Optimisation. I quickly discovered how important backlinks are – not just any backlinks, but only quality backlinks with relevant and compelling content on powerful industry-specific websites.</em></p>
<p><em>Then, I set out to build the perfect service to provide just that – high-quality backlinks with compelling content on industry-specific websites.</em></p>
<p><em>Fast forward a few years later, I now have a permanent office based here in Davao City, Philippines. It’s a quiet beach-side city that gives me access to virtually-unlimited skilled writers, editors, and content marketers to provide essentially limitless amounts of super high-quality powerful backlinks.”</em></p>
<p>Ardor was founded by Kris Reid, an Australian entrepreneur with a degree in Software Engineering from Queensland University of Technology.</p>
<p>After obtaining his degree in 2006, Kris decided to scratch his itchy feet by heading off to London. During his time in London, Dublin and Brussels, Kris worked under contract with Euroclear, Visa Europe and Sony Research &amp; Development.</p>
<p>These development positions were ideal for Kris to become battle hardened in the real world of software engineering, finance, commerce and contracting.</p>
<p>The global financial crisis hit Europe very hard so Kris headed back to Australia where he developed an online game called Mob Warrior. Having completed the game, the one thing which all site owners need to face is how to get people to find the site and sign up to play it.</p>
<p>“This is when I first began to learn about SEO, meta data, title tags, content, keywords and links” says Kris.</p>
<p>He went on to explain: “Links were my initial focus, they fascinated me. Google rely quite a lot on links to indicate which site has more authority than another. Of course links are not the only thing Google relies on but regardless of fashion and what some experts claim, links are just as important now as they ever were”</p>
<p>With that in mind Kris built a linking service which is still a mainstay of Ardor SEO. The business began to grow as more and more clients came onboard.</p>
<p>To accommodate the growth and to keep the competitive edge which Ardor enjoys, Kris moved to Davao city, Philippines in January 2013.</p>
<p>He opened an office and moved the staff who had been working from home into the office.</p>
<p>The next big addition to Ardor was content, so Ardor Content was born with an army of English speaking writers and editors. Kris invented a unique user rating system to ensure only top quality writers remained on the team. This has ensured great content is the standard. Software engineers and managers were added to stabilize the growth and to maintain the high standards while the company grew at a phenomenal rate.</p>
<p>Next stop was Phnom Penh, Cambodia where Ardor opened another office in order to gain better access to expats in South East Asia. More management was added as well as a sales team, accountant, social media experts and more content and graphics staff. Now that the company has been fleshed out with professionals in all the key areas and has a proven track record of getting results it was time to consolidate all aspects under one banner, one site.</p>

<p>In 1987 I was born in the middle of a January snowstorm in Missouri. I didn’t always have entrepreneurship in my blood. Growing up my dad worked for the state and my mom a pharmacist. There wasn’t much entrepreneurship in my extended family either: teachers, lawyers, doctors, insurance agents, but no entrepreneurs.</p>
<p>All in all I lived a pretty typical upper-middle class, midwestern childhood. I played soccer, baseball, basketball, swam and generally got exposure to all the opportunities I wanted because my parents went to great lengths to make sure I had those opportunities.</p>
<p><strong>Music as Entrepreneurship</strong></p>
<p>In middle school I took up playing the saxophone. I quickly fell in love. I would pull out Cannonball Adderley, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane and Ray Charles albums and try and play along.</p>
<p>At first I wasn’t very good, but over time I could hold my own with the local jazz musicians. In 9th grade I got asked to play my first professional gig and made $50 playing at the Missouri Governor’s Mansion for just three hours of my time.</p>
<p>This was the first time I ever got paid for a specialized skill that I had and not because I was a warm body that could perform menial tasks. I didn’t realize it at the time, but this was my first foray into entrepreneurship.</p>
<p><strong>The Search in High School and College</strong></p>
<p>Like many of my friends, in high school and college I had no idea what to do with my life. I blindly followed the rules, got good grades and made my teachers and parents happy.</p>
<p>I had a knack for math and science so everyone told me to I should be an engineer because that’s what engineers do. So in college I settled on majoring in industrial engineering even though I wasn’t super sure what they did at the time. I knew it had something to do with efficiency and that’s something I could get behind.</p>
<p>Eventually my junior year of college I decided that I needed to figure out what the heck I would do with my life so I took an internship with a major telecom provider because they paid well and it seemed like a stable gig.</p>
<p>Over the course of the summer I realized how much I hated corporate life. I would come into the office and work hard for a solid hour each day and surf the web the rest of the time. It was the worst.</p>
<p>The brutal irony is that my bosses loved what I did and praised my work every step of the way. I realized that summer that a “regular” job wasn’t for me.</p>
<p><strong>Becoming an Entrepreneur</strong></p>
<p>I didn’t decide on entrepreneurship immediately after that summer. All I knew was that I hated wasting away for 8 hours a day at a job I could do effectively in 1 hour a day.</p>
<p>That final year of school I started looking for different types of work I could do. Something a little outside the box and I found a small, local tech company that was looking for a marketing intern.</p>
<p>I had zero marketing experience at the time, but I picked up a Seth Godin book and talked my way into the job.</p>
<p>It turned out to be a pivotal turning point in becoming an entrepreneur.</p>
<p><strong>Learning the Ropes</strong></p>
<p>Over the next year as an intern and ffull-timeemployee at this local tech company I learned a lot about product and marketing. I had no idea what worked and what didn’t so I tried my hand at just about everything.</p>
<p>Essentially, I was honing my chops to become what I call a <a href="https://wadefoster.net/post/42802176600/full-stack-marketing">Full Stack Marketer</a>.</p>
<p>After about a year I’d learned about as much as I could and started trying to build my own company. I spent my spare time selling people in the community on just about anything I could. I built WordPress sites, I whipped up email marketing templates, I built a small web app. Anything to learn problems that other business owners were having.</p>
<p>During the day I started working with local Columbia, Missouri entrepreneur, Brant Bukowksy, doing email marketing automation at VAMortgageCenter.com. It was there that then co-worker, Bryan Helmig, devised the initial seeds of our first startup, <a href="https://zapier.com/">Zapier</a>.</p>
<p><strong>Diving In</strong></p>
<p>In October of 2011, Bryan and I teamed up with our friend and local developer, Mike Knoop, to build the initial prototype of Zapier and win the first annual Columbia Startup Weekend.</p>
<p>After the weekend we worked nights and weekends to build the initial beta product for customers and in January of 2012 I was able to start my entrepreneurial journey full time by quitting my day job.</p>
<p>With the Zapier beta going well, we applied to Y Combinator’s summer 2012 batch and were accepted. In May of 2012 I moved to California with my wife and we’ve been loving it ever since.</p>
<p><strong>Giving Back</strong></p>
<p>I’m by no means an expert at anything, but I do have a lot of in-the-trenches experience at marketing, team building, fundraising, bootstrapping, and product. I love to help out when I can.</p>

<p>My Journey</p>
<p>I am a former bi-vocational pastor and contractor.  I was the President and founder of Home Innovations, a Design/Build remodeling firm based in Fishersville, Virginia. We provided design, construction, and fine furnishing services for the home. Beginning in 2010, I pastored a new Heartlink Network church plant in Nelson Co. Virginia called Riverbank.</p>
<p>For years my career and work has centered around construction.  I have always enjoyed working with my hands, but honestly I found my way to construction by default.  I had spent time in summer jobs (that paid better than fast food), church youth group mission projects, and one year serving with Habitat for Humanity, and family projects and learned some skills.  So when I got married, and I needed to provide for our family, I naturally went into construction because it was the only marketable skill that I had.  Through the years I moved from general laborer, to carpenter, and then from foreman to contractor / business owner.</p>
<p>But life has not always been filled with success.  In 2009, the business that I had founded and ran, Home Innovations, failed in bankruptcy.  It was one of the most difficult seasons of my life.  There were a lot of reasons for what happened, some outside of my control.  But, I was the one leading.  I was the one “at the helm when the ship went down.”  I was embarrassed, felt like a failure, and felt like I had let everybody down.  The affects were far reaching, hurting my employees, suppliers, friends and family.  For month’s I struggled with feelings of failure, worthlessness, and hopelessness.  Over the next few years I went through the slow process of healing and rebuilding my career and life.  Therefore, I have a special place in my heart for those who are trying to get back on their feet after a crisis event.  I know first hand how difficult those seasons of life can be.</p>
<p>Ever since I was young, I have sensed a call to pastor and help people.  I studied pastoral ministry at Liberty University and then received my Biblical Studies Certificate from Cornerstone Bible Institute.  My wife and I spent a few years in youth ministry until our twins were born and we shifted our focus to our young family.  In 2008 we started sensing a call to pastoral ministry again and began the process of relocating our family to Nelson County, VA .  Over the next 5 years we gave leadership to the establishment of the Riverbank church. During this time, I also worked bi-vocationally as the Production Department Manager for Integrity Home Contracting in Charlottesville, VA.</p>
<p>In 2013-14 God led me on a journey to personal and relational health that resulted in me resigning from both Integrity Home Contracting and the Riverbank church.  During this season I worked as independent construction consultant and business consultant for construction companies.  I also took this time to rest, spend time with my family, and discern my direction and God given destiny.</p>
<p>As a result of this journey I launched this blog in 2014 as the first step of encouraging ordinary people to fulfill their destinies through writing, coaching and speaking.</p>
<p><strong>About me Personally</strong></p>
<p>I met my beautiful bride during high school.  We are both pretty strong willed and had to “chill out” a little before we started dating after high school.  We were married shortly after in 1996.  We have four amazing daughters (Twins in the middle).  They are teenagers and learning to spread their wings.  I love this season of family life.</p>
<p>I enjoy working with my hands, being outdoors, carpentry projects, gardening and homesteading.  I believe in simple sustainable living and taking care of the wonderful earth that has been entrusted to us.</p>
<p>I love sports and cheering on my favorite teams…. the Atlanta Braves, Liberty Flames Football, and UVA Cavaliers basketball.</p>
<p>And finally, after all these years in construction, I still like my pick-up truck and power tools.  And, I am most comfortable in my jeans and a baseball cap!</p>

I started building forts and tree-houses as child, graduated to summer jobs in the construction field, and then worked my up from a carpenter&#8217;s helper to a Class A Contractor.
