I am passionately in love with my husband, Frederic, who is also my business partner. I take time out every day to laugh with, talk with, and roll around on the floor with my kids. I work out regularly, get a massage every Saturday, take fantastic vacations, and have plenty of “me” time to dream, to go out with friends, or to kick back and just do nothing.

Just in case you’re wondering; this was not always my reality!

In fact, just seventeen years ago, I was unhappy with virtually every aspect of my life. I was thirty pounds overweight and nearly $60,000 in debt. I worked at a job I hated, and had a knack for attracting the “wrong” kind of men. I tried everything I could think of to change the circumstances of my life, believing that affecting outer change was the key to being inwardly happy. Nothing worked, and as a result, my life felt like a constant, uphill struggle.

So, how did I get from where I was then to where I am today? The answer is simple: I learned about the Universal Laws that govern deliberate creation, I applied them in my life, and I immediately began manifesting all the things I had ever wanted – spontaneously and effortlessly.

Today, my mission and passion is teaching others how to engage these universal principles – the Laws of Attraction, Abundance, and Allowing, to name a few – to attract their ideal partners, create their ideal bodies, become more empowered parents to their children, and magnetize success and abundance in every part of their lives. I was a 10 pound Pom, emigrating from the UK to Australia with my parents and two older brothers in 1951. It was over 40°C when we landed and my mother later said she had wanted to get on the first boat back home. The photo shows us on The Asturiasen route via Russia in November 1951. I’m the one with the doll.I was a month short of four when the boat docked and six when my sister was born. My parents bought land in the coastal wilds of Seaview Downs, South Australia, about an hour out from Adelaide and for the next 15 years I explored my way through school and books, the beach and books, roaming as far as my feet and bike would take me in a day, and books. As you can see, Seaview Downs was pretty desolate in those days. We lived in the caravan until dad built something a little more permanent. There were two adults, a teenager, two youngsters and a new baby in that caravan!In 1966 I met John, the Gawler boy to top all boys, married him the next year, and the year after that had twins, Simone and Simon. We get ribbed about that all the time, mostly from the twins themselves. You can see from the wedding photo that I was a Mod. Mine and my bridesmaids outfits were considered very radical.Three years later Nicole joined the team. For a moment the doctor thought she was twins too, and we joke with her now that it would have been Nicole and Nicholas. You can imagine the derision the kids aim our way!In 1980 we packed our bags and moved to Canberra to further mine and John’s careers.Until I left full-time work in February 2004 I was a professional editor and eventually became Director of Publishing at the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. The photo to the right shows me at Parliament House with the Chairman, Prof Allen Fels, the day the ACCC came into being.In 2004 John and I moved to the Sunshine Coast, spending five years there before moving back to Canberra because we (read into that I) missed the family.

We now spend part of our time in the UK with Simone, who lives in West Sussex with her husband and three young children. That’s me with my oldest UK grandson at Worthing, a beachside town just along the coast from Brighton. We had fish and chips for lunch.My fiction work includes two published novels, both literary suspense, and a collection of short stories.My non-fiction work includes two works. One is a guide to writing good fiction: 25 essential writing tips: guide to writing good fiction. The second is a family medical history diary in which you can keep a record of everything of a medical nature that happens in your family.My first novel, Automaton, won the Australian Fast Books Prize for Best Fiction in 2003. It was also nominated by Sisters In Crime for the 2004 Davitt Award, which is for the best Australian female crime fiction for the year. The story was inspired by my five years working with the Commonwealth Court Reporting Service in Canberra during which I spent many a day in the Supreme Court recording the agonies of those unfortunate enough to be in the dock and their families, who would watch and usually suffer in silence. The photo shows me at the award presentation with the ABC’s Peter Ross, who was the judge.Automaton, with a new cover, was re-released in October 2011.My second novel, Imbroglio, is literary espionage suspense. It was released in October 2011.In mid-2011 Simone mentioned that she was preparing to publish two journals for the home (click here to see them). It prompted John to say that ever since the children were small he had thought that a journal in which you could record all of your family’s medical history would be really useful. After recovering from my surprise that it had taken him so many years to mention it I decided to publish Family medical history. It’s a departure from my novels, but one I hope will be enthusiastically received.I’ve been working on a third novel, Dragline; literary suspense with a corporate law theme this time. I finished the first draft ages ago but not being happy with it I put it aside to think about. However, I think it’s time to get back into it.

The point of these factoids is to demonstrate that I teach personal finance and investing based on real experience. I walk the talk and have the results to prove it. I do not teach ivory tower theories or inaccurate conventional wisdom: instead, I show you what works, what doesn’t, and why – all based on actual, provable, experience.

With that said, there is a serious limitation to the financial and professional data cited above. It tells you about my financial and investment expertise, but it doesn’t tell you anything about me as a person. In other words, there are many self-proclaimed financial experts with impressive resumes so what is different about Todd?

The most obvious difference is I made my money investing in publicly traded markets just like you can do; whereas, many financial experts made their money through becoming best-selling authors and marketing financial advice to you. Unless you plan on writing a best-selling book and building a marketing empire you may find difficulty duplicating their success.

Another key difference is the focus of my message. My focus is on personal development and how the pursuit of financial freedom provides a transformational path to personal fulfillment. This stands in stark contrast to other money experts who use lavish lifestyles and fancy vacations to sell their message. My focus is on the experience of life, not the toys and goodies.

Many investment gurus drive flashy cars, wear expensive clothes, and live in mansions. I don’t. I dress on the casual side of average, drive ordinary cars, and live in a nice home in a nice but not extraordinary neighborhood. In short, I’m the classic “Millionaire Next Door” as described in the book with the same title by Stanley and Danko.

I also live very traditional values where I believe in treating people fairly and giving more value than I take in business relationships. The result is my former business associates remain good, personal friends to this day, and my business endeavors have not left a trail of bankruptcies, lawsuits and controversy like so many other financial experts. Financial results are important, but money won’t contribute to fulfillment if your life and relationships are a mess.

The reason I choose an ordinary but comfortable lifestyle is because I prefer to build net worth instead of overhead so I can enjoy freedom instead of flash. I didn’t pursue wealth so that I could buy everything I wanted: I pursued wealth so I could do whatever I desired, and be whatever I was capable of being. I value experience over stuff.

I’ve never wanted the mansions, private jets, flashy sports cars, and other encumbrances that the get-rich-quick gurus try to sell you on. I’m too environmentally conscious to consume at such a wasteful level. Besides, that is the mistaken pursuit of material wealth as a substitute for happiness. It doesn’t work.

I find joy in life experience, intellectual pursuits, and relationships. First on the list is family and friends closely followed by reading stimulating books, enjoying outdoor recreation like running, swimming, skiing, hiking, cycling, camping, backpacking, travel, and I love personal growth. I do exactly as I please: I don’t report to a boss and nobody owns my time except me (and maybe my wife). I take three months of vacation per year and usually wake up without an alarm.

None of this costs much money but it does take time, and that is why I pursued financial freedom in my own life and support others to do the same – so that you have the time to do what gives you more joy in life without worrying about money – so that you can live true wealth by finding fulfillment and happiness.

I teach the pursuit of financial freedom as a transformational path because that’s what it was for me. I grew in ways I never imagined, and I am happier for it. The money was nice, but the inner transformation was the bigger reward.

And that is why I formed Financial Mentor – to share that journey with you. To grow a community of like minded individuals who are passionate about building wealth and financial freedom because it improves the quality of life for themselves and their families.

I enjoy working with business owners and investors who share my passion for enjoying more of what is important in life.
